National Universities Public Affairs Forum 2015

The National Universities Public Affairs Forum 2015 builds on the previous year’s CASE Public Affairs Workshop and this year’s CASE Europe Annual Conference, attended by almost 1200 higher education professionals. This year the event is supported by Wonkhe and Universities UK and will be hosted at the University of Warwick Business School’s stunning new campus in the Shard.

This exclusive forum is the only event of its kind in the UK that offers a direct and relevant opportunity professional development opportunity to colleagues working in the fast-expanding university public affairs and policy space.

Public Affairs

Public affairs is an area of marked growth in higher education, with institutions investing heavily in resources and staff as a response to three primary developments:

  • The rise of the ‘Impact agenda’, where almost all academic funding has to demonstrate a tangible connection to wider socio-economic benefit – leading to an explosion in researchers attempting to engage policymakers;
  • The uncertainty inherent in current higher education policy, which for the last five years (and for at least the next five) has fluctuated to the extent that the degree of risk to universities is such that they have invested increased resources in intelligence gathering, policy-influence and support;
  • The significant financial rewards that universities can access through effective positioning and government relations – in particular via the industrial strategy’s emphasis on innovation; regional economic development funding; and the science budget.
